Health Safety & Event Management

Risk Assessment

In the United Kingdom you have a legal duty to assess the risks to the health and safety of your event visitors, contractors, employees and volunteers.

Any risk which they are exposed to while at your event.

It is recommended that while carrying out your risk assessment you consult your staff. This can often be difficult when hiring temporary event staff or working with volunteers. This is where n experienced Event Safety Consultant who is familiar with your type of event is your best option.

UK Health and Safety Law

In the UK you are governed by law under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the minimum you must do is:

  • identify what could cause injury or illness at your event (hazards)
  • decide how likely it is that someone could be harmed by the risk and how seriously
  • take action to eliminate or if that is not possible how to control the hazard.

Assessing risk is just one part of the overall process used to control risks at your event.

For most small, low-risk events the steps you need to take are straightforward.

Contractors andĀ Suppliers

You are not alone when it comes to risk assessment. As Event Safety professionals we consult a range of sources to establish the risk and develop reduction strategies.

It is common to speak with your contractors and suppliers about the risk of the equipment or products they provide. They know the risks involved and scope for potentially dangerous shortcuts and problems. Contractors and suppliers are more likely to understand why procedures are put in place to control risks and follow them if they have been involved in developing health and safety practices for their own environment.

This does not mean that formal consultation is required before every task-specific assessment conducted for your event. It simply means that consultation should form part of the general risk assessment process.
